PRACTICE AREAS

Why hire a CDFA?

Benefits of using a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst

From reviewing your budget to projecting post-divorce household income needs, a CDFA can provide valuable financial guidance.

We can also help you understand the taxation of assets being divided and provide a reality check on the choices you're making.

Additionally, a CDFA can be a part of your larger divorce team, helping you navigate the different processes and understand the equity of proposed settlements.

We can review the disposition of the marital home, and can model keeping the home, transitioning it to the spouse, refinancing, or selling altogether.

We can help you understand the difference between an IRA, a 401K, a Roth IRA, a pension or an annuity, and what are taxable assets versus tax deferred assets versus tax-free? This is an important consideration when dividing accounts.

We can review your social security statement and discuss the benefits and risks of claiming on your spouse’s benefit or taking your own, claiming early, or waiting until Full Retirement Age.

We can help you with tracking the items settling post-divorce.

A bit about me

Sue McFadden grew up in New Hartford, Connecticut, and attended the University of Connecticut, Northwestern University, and the University of Pittsburgh before moving west to Oregon. As a mother, she had the privilege of staying home with her children while they were young and later re-entered the workforce when her youngest was in 7th grade. Sue's experience as a coach and mediator at the Multnomah County Courthouse has given her over 300 hours of valuable mediation experience.

Sue spent 17 years at Ameriprise Financial.  Her career in financial advising began as an unlicensed support person, moved to licensed support, and financial plan writing, and quickly worked her way up to becoming a fully licensed financial advisor. Her specialty is supporting women through life transitions, such as death of a spouse, divorce, and managing a windfall or inheritance. Sue is passionate about empowering women and educating them so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

Sue began training for marathons at the age of 50 and has completed the Portland Marathon three times, as well as several half marathons along the West Coast. At the age of 60, Sue started backpacking and has completed most of the Wonderland Trail in Mount Rainier and the Timberline Trail on Mount Hood.

Sue's love for adventure extends to her passion for cycling. She enjoys week-long bike rides, including Cycle Oregon, Ride Idaho, and riding through the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Sue resides in Oregon with her husband, Bob, and is fortunate to be close to her grown daughters and their husbands, who live in Oregon and Washington.
